Self Improvement Starts With Making Decisions

Self improvement is about making decisions and making the right ones. To have a positive change in your life, you have to decide you want a positive change, and this in itself is making a decision.

Points which I liked

  • You cannot just hope you will have a positive change in your life, or just wishing it will come, you have to decide to take a positive action towards this change, pursue it aggressively, and stick to it no matter what.
  • Decisions require 100% of our commitment, not 99%, not even 99.999%, it has to be 100%. Think about this, when a person is almost there, is actually not there at all.
  • How can you be almost there at one place? Either you are there or not there, there is no such thing as I am almost there.
  • Successful people are always looking for ways to improve themselves and are aware that regardless how good they think they are, there is always room for improvement. Such people know that happiness and fulfillment is based on their consistent growth and contribution based on self-improvement ideas.

What is at the root of an effective team?

·         People know what they’re doing – they have the technical capabilities and people skills necessary to get the job done effectively

·         People Enjoy what they’re doing – people like to come to work each day and are enjoying their daily tasks and their overall project assignments

·         People want to do what they are assigned to do – people feel the current tasks are what they should be doing. Their career is advancing according to their plans and their work is facilitating their long term goals

·         There is no internal strife – members get along well

From the book Managing Test People – A guide to practical technical management.

Fish

One of the projects that I manage is nearing its completion and we want to give a good working software to our customer. We have developed a framework on which we are building the custom application and we are in the process of making our UI Look and Feel better. When we started changing the UI, we have found few usability issues and we are working on fixing those usability issues now.

I was not doing well last couple of days. My energy level was down and the usual smile was missing from my face L. Last 2 weekends we worked and we as a team were desperate for a break this weekend (Pressure???).

I got up late today and thought I will read something as I did not read anything last 2 weeks. I started reading FISH! A Remarkable way to Boost Morale and Improve Results. I have seen the FISH movie before, but this is the first time I am reading it.

I never thought reading a book can boost my energy level. I completed this in an hour’s time and I felt like going to work today.

Awesome book

Some of the items, which I liked in this book, are

There is always a choice about the way you do your work,

Even if there is not a choice about the work itself

We can choose the attitude we bring to work.

Learning’s:

Choose your attitude: Choose to make today a great day. Your colleagues, customers, team members and you yourself will be thankful.

Find ways to play: We can be serious about work without being serious about ourselves

Be Present: Stay focused in order to be present when your customers and team members most need you

Make their day: Find someone who needs a helping hand, a word of support, or a good ear – and make their day

I borrowed this book from sendhil. Thank you sendhil J

Next Step: I will try to find the movie and watch it with my team J

13 sources of workplace irritation

David Zinger has a post on 13 sources of workplace irritation. It talks about Who gets to you at work? What gets to you at work? What are those things that irritate you the most?”

13 sources of workplace irritation:

The Enemy: People who are employed by the organization but only see the organization as the enemy.

Slide junkies: Their 30 minute presentation consist of 129 PowerPoint slides as they stand in the dark reading what you see on the screen.

Gripers without Gumption: People who gripe yet lack the gumption to do anything about it.

Look at me: Being copied on emails that have nothing to do with my work.

Just Make it Happen: Being told by someone you report to: I don’t care how you do it, just make it happen.

What time zone are you in: People who attend meetings but who constantly arrive 10 to 15 minutes late.

Screen suckers: People in meetings who cannot sustain contact with the agenda and drift away into a blackberry screen sucking stupor.

It is that time of year again: Getting feedback only once a year as the person struggles to remember anything you did.

Bologne feedback: Getting formula feedback as the person says one nice thing, one thing to improve, and another nice thing - it makes me feel like a brainless Oreo cookie or a slice of bologne being sandwiched by management.

Fault without fix: People who constantly find fault without offering fixes.

Paperless cuts: Getting paper cuts in this paperless society.

Energy suckers: Those people who suck the energy out of a group creating an empty vacuum of effort.

Theoretical managers: The cerebral person who can spout the theory and outline organizational behavior dynamics in project meetings but has not actually done anything for over 11 years.
